This is an excerpt of an essay written by Tana. It deals with dating and marriage and how it's changed throughout the generations:
I started dating when I was about 14. My parents were pretty lenient on the matter and I could do what I wanted to do as long as I was home by my curfew. When we go on dates we usually go out to eat and then to a movie. Some dates involve parties after dinner but that I really don't consider too much of a date. Some people may have gone on picnics or bowling or several different activities. One advantage that our generation has is the ability to pick up camp and go to another town. Many dates involve going to Sioux Falls or to Brookings because there is so much more to do there and many more places to go. I went out with quite a few boys in high school until my senior year when Chris Olson and me began to date. We met through mutual friends just as my grandmother and mother met their husbands. I really initiated the beginning by stopping by his dorm room to ask him to go do stuff. For the girl to initiate the beginning of a relationship is a lot different than my grandmother and mother. Back when both of them were dating it was the man's job to ask the girl and pretty much to do all the initiating. By the end of the week when I had asked him to do something every other night such as basketball games, Elk's dance, and driving a friend to get their Senior pictures taken, he finally asked me to go out on Saturday. That Saturday we went to eat and then to a friend's party. After that it was all down hill. We went pretty much everywhere together and did everything together. I went my first year of college to Mankato State University and just couldn't stand being away from home and sometimes him. I drove back every weekend to see him and occasionally he would come visit me. The next year I moved back to Madison and transferred all my credits to Dakota State University. Now in just a few short weeks we will be getting married. I plan on continuing my education to become a teacher and he will further his education too. In a few years we plan to have children and live happily ever after.
This is the last email message that I received from Tana. She was asking for help with a homework question, but I am comforted knowing the way she felt about me...even if I didn't do it. It was sent about 57 hours before the accident.
